IBCS® Compliant Profit and Loss Statement in 3 Steps

The "Vertical Waterfall Chart" layout component enables you to quickly and easily create IBCS-compliant representations of your data.

You want to present your profit and loss statement in a clear and concise way.

Requirement

A report containing the dimensions and key figures you want to depict is available.

Procedure

Insert a Title

Insert a title at the top of the report using the component manager. Enter the following text: "Profit and loss statement in mEUR".

Edit the DataView

  • Select dimensions for rows and columns

    In our report, the rows represent the individual items of the profit and loss statement and the columns the current year, the previous year and the deviations.

  • Define elements for rows and columns.

  • Format elements - Value Format

    In our report, the key business figures should be expressed in absolute terms. Open the Element properties dialog box for the current year, the previous year and the deviation. In the Value Format tab, you make the settings as shown below: Category "Number", the last option in Format "1.234,50 Mio", Digits "0" and Negative Values "Positive".

  • Format elements - Chart

    When you want to assign individual color schemes to the waterfalls in the vertical waterfall chart, you can specify the colors in the Chart tab. Please also refer to the notes in the Individual color schemes for waterfalls and bar chart section of the Settings for the vertical waterfall chart topic.

    Make the settings as shown below: Assign Color 1 to additive values and Color 2 to subtractive values.

Insert a Vertical Waterfall Chart and Format It

  • Create a new layout component.
    1. Select Vertical Waterfall Chart.
    2. Assign a DataView.
    3. Select "Insert at another position in the report".
    4. Specify the settings for the layout component.
    5. Specify a name and description for the component.
  • Place the layout component to the desired position.
  • Define subtotals and running totals.

    Right-click the datapoints which are subtotals or running totals and select Aggregation - SubTotal or Aggregation - Running total in the context menu.

  • Disable aggregation color.

    Open the Chart properties and disable the Aggregation color property in the Vertical Waterfall Chart category.

  • Insert separators.

    Open the Chart properties and enable the "Before" Separator in the Datapoint behavior category.

  • Apply analytical visualization to operating expenses.

    For a negative appearance of the costs, we recommend to apply a threshold analysis to the operating expensis.

  • If required, you can also change the font size for the positions (Y Axis properties) and the datapoints (Datapoint label properties).

Your IBCS-compliant waterfall chart is then ready!
